How to Prevent and Treat Flea Infestations

by | Apr 4, 2019

Fleas are a nuisance to people and pets alike. However, you can prevent a flea infestation with coordinated efforts to keep your home, property, and pets healthy and clean:

  • Eliminate potential flea habitats by trimming your lawn and ridding it of weeds.
  • Restrain your pets—particularly cats and dogs—so they can’t roam freely in infested areas or encounter infested animals.
  • Discourage birds and other mammals from nesting or roosting near your home.
  • Screen or seal vents, chimneys, crevices, and other nooks and crannies where rats, mice, squirrels, and other rodents may lurk.
  • Regularly groom your pets and wash or destroy their bedding.
  • Regularly vacuum your home and dispose of vacuum bags in an outdoor trash receptacle.

If you’re dealing with a flea infestation, consult with a licensed pest control operator to address the problem. If you have pets, you should also call your veterinarian to discuss treatment. Infested pets and premises—both indoor and outdoor—must be treated simultaneously.
