Quick Notes on Spring Seeding
For the best chance of success, we typically recommend seeding between mid-August and the end of September. But if you’re looking to give your lawn a boost after the long winter months, spring seeding is an option.
Spring seeding should be done between March 1 and May 15. Early seeding will usually be more successful and require less watering than seeding done late in the season. Seeding after May 15 is not recommended but can be successful with a lot of daily watering.
The type of seed you pick depends on your lawn. To find the best fit, you’ll need to consider shade, soil quality, traffic level, and compaction. Kentucky bluegrass with a small amount of perennial ryegrass (specifically, an 80/20 combo) is a popular seed mix in Iowa. If you’re facing adverse conditions, one of the many varieties of fescue might be a good fit.
Did you know? The herbicide Tenacity can be sprayed on new seeding to kill weeds without harming the new grass.
