The Basics of Fall Lawn Care

by | Aug 15, 2018

Fall is the best time to strengthen and improve your lawn. Here are five easy steps you can incorporate into your lawn care program to prep for a lush spring:

  1. Pick up leaves. Heavy leaf cover suffocates turfgrass over the dormant season. Heavy, wet, and saturated leaves also create favorable conditions for turfgrass diseases and provide harbor for pesky insects. Plus, neighbors will appreciate your well-maintained landscape!
  2. Spray weeds. Make sure to use herbicides that target hard-to-kill and late-germinating weeds.
  3. Fertilize to encourage deep root growth and help turfgrass store the nutrients needed to make it through winter. Turfgrass will emerge next spring healthy and thick.
  4. Aerate. Aeration is an easy and affordable way to enhance your lawn, as it reduces compaction and helps prevent thatch build-up. Aeration is recommended in either the spring or fall, when turfgrass is actively growing. We suggest aerating every other year or annually in high-traffic areas.
  5. Overseed and patch bare spots. Mid-August to late September is a great time to fill in thin spots with overseeding. Keep the new seed bed moist and follow up with a turf starter fertilizer.
