Three Tips for Spring Lawn Care
We’ve waved good-bye to winter—spring is in the air, and your awakening lawn needs a little TLC. Here are three tips for getting your spring lawn care regimen off to a great start:
- Don’t start too early. Be patient. Wait until your lawn is mostly green before mowing or aerating. If you start too early, you might compact the grass or kill new shoots before they have a chance to grow.
- Fertilize, fertilize, fertilize. Fertilize your lawn just before you mow for the first time. Feeding your lawn early strengthens the roots before the heavy growing season. A well-fed lawn with a strong root system is better able to combat heat, cold, drought, mowing, foot traffic, and other stresses.
- Apply herbicide. Early spring is a good time to apply pre-emergent herbicides to control grassy weeds—crabgrass, watergrass, and foxtail—before they develop. It is much easier to get rid of these weeds when they are young. However, don’t overdo the spring weed killer. You may damage the new grass starting to grow. Broadleaf weeds like dandelions and clover can be treated any time after they emerge.
